Although the history of Indian English literature is relatively short, it is rich in award-winning and critically acclaimed masterpieces that should not be missed by any book lover. Of course, I haven't read all the authors on this list (I intend to). But it is intended as a reference for anyone interested in Indian literature who wants to dig deeper and learn about its most prominent writers, both classical and contemporary.
He writes in English and Bengali with equal talent. His writings are the foremost authority on British colonial Indian history and culture. While working as an accountant in the Indian Army, he started writing for popular magazines and newspapers. In 1951, his masterpiece "Autobiography of an Unknown Indian" was published, placing him among the greatest writers in India. The same book ruined his life for its controversial endorsement - he was fired from the civil service, stripped of his pension and blacklisted.
