Desai Liaquat Pact

Bhulabhai Desai started his political career with Anni Besant's Home Rule League. After this, in 1928, he was associated with Bardoli Satyagrah of Indian National Congress and finally in 1930 he joined Congress. After this, in November 1934, he was also heard for the Central Legislative Assembly from Gujarat. When the British government was forcibly taking support of Indians in World War 2, it was Bhulabhai who, while giving a strong play in southern in November 1940, had said, "If this is not India's war, then there is no support for India either". Bhulabhai was a very rich man. After his death, Bhulabhai Desai Memorial Institute was also built in Bombay with the contribution of his wealth. Apart from this, in his memory there is also a road named after him in Mumbai. Whose name is Bhulabhai desai road.

Now let's talk about Desai Liaquat Pact.

Quit India movement lasted from 1942 to mid of 1945. Almost all the leaders of Congress were in jail at that time. Only Gandhi ji could come out, that too on medical grounds. In this way Bhulabhai Desai was one of the few Congress leaders who were not imprisoned. The British government had already said that no constitutional advancement is possible until the Indian National Congress and the Muslim league understand each other. At such a time C Rajagopalachari had given CR Formula in 1944 but Jinnah rejected it completely. So now a kind of Political Vacuum had been created. And now again an attempt was made in this way, by Congress Leader Bhulabhai Desai. Who was also a member of the Constituent Assembly. He started talking secretly with Nawab Sir Liaquat Ali Khan. Who was also the General Secretary of the Muslim League from 1937. And the biggest leader of Muslim League after Jinnah, all these talks were being done secretly. Gandhiji, Sardar Patel, Nehru or any other big leaders did not know anything about it. Apart from this, no one in the Muslim League knew anything about this pact except Liaquat ali khan; Not even Jinnah. Suddenly one day, this news got leaked that a pact is being made between Muslim League and Indian National Congress, this news reached everyone through newspapers. Everyone who was associated with this pact turned hostile. Jinnah and the Muslim League refused to have any kind of agreement. In fact, Liaquat ali khan also refused to be involved in any kind of negotiation or pact of this act. Congress leaders were very angry with Bhula bhai, that why he did this negotiation without discussing with anyone! Because of this incident, Bhula Bhai's stature in Congress has reduced completely. Congress did not even give ticket to Bhulabhai in the next Constituent Assembly. It is said that whatever Bhulabhai did, he did at the behest of Gandhiji. But no one knows how much truth was there in this matter. In fact, when Bhulabhai was very close to his death and Gandhiji went to meet him, Bhulabhai did not even talk to him.

Both of them (Bhulabhai Desai and Liaquat Ali Khan) came up with the draft proposal for the formation of an interim government at the centre, consisting of—

● An equal number of persons nominated by the Congress and the League in the Central Legislature.

● 20% reserved seats for minorities.

No agreement could be reached between the Congress and the Muslim League on this basis, but the fact that a kind of equality was decided between the Congress and the Muslim League had far-reaching consequences.
